How to find your Windows 10 product key
If you need to reinstall Windows or upgrade your motherboard, our article will show you how to find or extract a Windows 10 product key.
If you upgrade from Windows 7 or 8, Windows 10 will automatically activate after connecting to the Microsoft server online. You do not need to enter the product key because you already have Windows 10 thanks to a genuine consumer copy of Windows 7 or 8.
However, there are a few cases where you need your product code. If you have upgraded from Windows 7 or 8 and planned to upgrade your computer components, thus wiping your hard drive, you will need a Windows 10 product key.
If you are installing a new system together, you also need your Windows 10 product key.
Both scenarios are related to the new Windows installation, and although Microsoft has added the Activation Troubleshooter tool in Anniversary Update (in Settings> Update and Security> Activation), you may be stuck between a rock and a hard place if you did not decompress your Windows 10.
